THE ANATOMY OF A KENDAMA
Ken Tama?
A kendama isn’t just a wooden toy, it’s a full creativity machine.
Every cup, curve, edge and the tama itself is designed for play, discovery and expression. The big cup, small cup and bottom cup are made to catch. The spike is made to land. The string is made to flow. And the bevel helps the tama lock in when everything lines up just right.
All these simple parts work together to give you endless ways to play. There’s no single “correct” way to use a kendama. If you can imagine it, you can try it and that’s what makes kendama such a fun and creative skill toy.

A Kendama is a traditional Japanese skill toy consisting of a wooden handle (ken) with three cups and a ball (tama) connected by a string.
For beginners, we recommend starting with a Kendama that has a larger tama and sticky paint finish, which makes learning basic tricks easier.
Start with Big Cup, Small Cup, and Base Cup. Once you master these, move on to Moshikame and Around the World.
Kendama care is easy and all our models are built to last with simple fixes. Here’s your full maintenance checklist:
Loose tama?
- Pull string through hole
- Tie a double knot under the tama
- Trim excess (leave 2 cm)
Chipped paint?
- Lightly sand with 400-grit
- Apply thin layer of clear coat or touch-up paint
- Dry 24h — good as new
Worn cups?
- Refresh with honeystick (included free with every kendama)
Pro tip: Rotate your kendama weekly, even wear = longer life.
Kendama Gent is the beating heart of Belgium’s scene, we run 1–2 sessions every single week, not just once a month.
What you get when you join the club:
- 1–2 weekly sessions (indoor winter spots + rooftop summer vibes), remote is even possible.
- Exact locations & times dropped every Sunday in our private WhatsApp crew chat. You can join here
- Zero ego, all levels: beginners get free loaner kendamas, pros bring the bangers
How to jump in:
Become a member in 30 seconds → get instant access to the WhatsApp group + weekly calendar.
Replace your kendama string every 30–60 days or sooner if it’s frayed, stretched or discolored. A fresh string is the difference between buttery-smooth spins and constant tangles.
Signs it’s time:
- Tama feels “heavy” or slow
- String knots easily
- You’re missing catches you used to hit
Daily play wears them down. Keep a spare in your pocket like the pros.
Yes ages 6+ with supervision (spike is pointed). Improves focus, coordination and patience.
Every kendama in our shop is built for beginners. No matter which one you pick, you’re getting zero-frustration from the first swing.
Most players land their first spike in 1–3 days with 10–15 min daily practice. Full basics (10 tricks)? 2–4 weeks.
Yes and science backs it. Studies on skill toys (like kendama and yo-yo) show improved reaction time, bilateral coordination, and stress reduction after just 10 minutes daily.
Real player wins:
- “I catch my keys mid-air now without looking.”
- “Helped my ADHD son focus better in school.”
- “Calms me down faster than meditation.”
